Appealing To Your Religiously-Oriented Representative For Peace

Having an Impact From A Distance

It isn't easy to know how to defund forced militarization and man-made famine, to have an impact from such a distance. Especially in my area, in the Southern United States. In North Carolina, I'm in a region where the faith-based community is large. After a little bit of research on our representatives, I found they belong to that portion of the population. They're Christians.

God's Army

I myself come from a Baptist Christian upbringing. I recognize the narrative today coming from our local republican church-goers. It's the same as what I heard in childhood, we are a part of God's Army. I saw these statements often on missionary leaflets we got in the mail from organizations requesting donations. Sure, most of them were asking for money to build schools or provide a family with livestock or supplies for their children- not supporting conflict.

Violence Promoting

However, some of the leaflets I saw coming into my grandmother's mailbox only a handful of years ago really got my ears burning. Had I really been raised in such a violence-promoting faith system?
These people were using hateful, rilesome speech. It was directed at "illegals" and "terrorists" and "Godless sinners," it seemed a far cry from how Jesus spoke in the texts I learned as a kid. It was promoting violence against non-believers.

Truth Breaking Through Defeatism

This year I admit to feeling some defeatism at calling my state representative, because if this is what modern Christian faith sounds like—and if he were being funded by groups that use this kind of speech—how much influence could my "godless sinner" words have on his decisions?
Then, I remembered the truth. I resonate with Jesus very, very much. If my senators and congresspeople do too, we are coming from the same place. The word of Yesuha, however tickled by time they may be, are the essence of the path of Wholeness I have been on. His words are a testament to oneness and being.

Being Honest on Common Ground

My question on how to appeal to a senator dissolved into an insight: my words don't have to be extraneous and cunning, they can be honest. We can find common-ground. If these men who represent my state have power to influence the nation's choices and movements as a whole, I have power to speak to them as a complete equal. We are both of the same unity, and can speak the language of the heart. This is how Jesus spoke to people, Mother Teresa, Ghandi, Martin Luther King Jr., Aretha Franklin, Bell Hooks, and many other revolutionaries.

A Script To Read When Calling Your
Faith Based Senator or Representative

So, using what is expressed in Jesus' words himself, I made a script that is concise and may appeal to people who do have their roots in love- somewhere inside them, and this stands as their true faith. Somewhere inside I do believe all of us have that core essential nature that is open and aware that suffering of another is suffering of oneself. May that nature be touched if we call these elected officials and let the voice of love and care and urgency behind that love be expressed.



I've drafted this script to be loosely followed. Please call your local representative's offices. Let this be part of your daily routine. We can feel the yearning for peace and sanity for others at our very core when we see images of displaced people, bodies, rubble, and starving innocents. We are those innocents, and they are us. Let that love be felt and shone back toward them. Even if no visible action is taken by the person we speak to, we still can speak to something in them that is like a dormant seed. When that seed is nourished—may it germinate and grow into an authentic act of mercy, care, a voice of reason.
